On 11 February 1900 Isabella Stewart Gardner wrote to art advisor Bernard Berenson, “I am beginning to make a catalogue for my own use. It is very slow work.” She filled this catalogue with photographs of her most important acquisitions to date and pasted in clippings from articles by experts in the field writing in praise of her paintings and sculptures.
