Gift from the painter, businessman, and friend to artists and writers Gerald Murphy (1888-1964) and his wife Sara Wiborg Murphy (1883-1975) to Isabella Stewart Gardner when they performed Afro-American folk songs at Fenway Court on 12 May 1921.
Commentary
Isabella Stewart Gardner enjoyed a wide range of musical traditions from around the world and within the United States. This book by musicologist Henry Edward Krehbiel is one of the first academic examinations of African American music produced in the 20th century.
