Folding Fan for Tosenkyo, 19th century - 20th century
Ink and color on paper with bamboo ribs, 25.7 x 42.5 cm (10 1/8 x 16 3/4 in.)
This simple folding fan is used in the traditional Japanese fan-tossing game, Tosenkyo. The fan is made of paper with narrow bamboo ribs attached with a rivet. The front side is painted a light shade of blue speckled with black. The back side is beige and the ribs have been fastened to the outside of the paper. In the last image, several Tosenkyo fans are shown wrapped in white paper, tied with white ribbon, and stored in a rectangular wooden box. The box shown has an open lid with a label at the end to our right, identifying the manufacturer and its location.
