These two very similar dark walnut chairs have simple structures but intricately carved decorative elements. The structure of each features a wooden seat with four simple squared legs on each corner; on each side the front leg is joined to the back by a squared wooden rail near the floor. The seat back structure is similarly simple, with outer squared rails rising from the corners joined by supportive back rails across the seat back. The back rails, though, have intricately carved scrolling borders framing central rectangular areas; a similar scrolling rail joins the front legs midway up from the floor to the seat, and a line of similar scrolls trims below the front seat edge. On one chair, the more ornate, the seatback rectangular areas, and the front of the seatback corner risers, are inlaid with cherry and maple scrolling motifs. On this chair, heightened carved scrolling on the top seatback rail, and taller, more carved finials rising from the seatback’s corner rails, add to the height and rectangular feel of the chair.
