This oil painting depicts the Christian narrative of the Annunciation, in which the Archangel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she will bear the Son of God. Both figures are light-skinned and have reddish gold hair.  The angel occupies the left half of the painting, and the Virgin occupies the right half.  The angel is slightly crouched in front of a stone structure with a window in the upper left of the painting.  The angel turns toward the Virgin, and gestures with their right hand.  In their left hand they hold a vertical staff, around which is a winding scroll with a Latin inscription.  The angel has blue-and-red wings and is wearing a red cloak with a reddish-gold border and green lining, over a long orange garment with many folds.  The Virgin is positioned closer to us than the angel, under a red and green textile canopy.  She had apparently been kneeling at a podium with a book open, but has turned toward us and part way toward the angel, with her hands held upward and her lidded eyes cast downward.  She is wearing a blue gown trimmed around the neck and wrists in gold, and a light blue cape that sprawls along the ground.  Her halo is gold, as is the background of the painting.  There is significant cracking in the paint’s surface.
