The viewer is seeing the scene from low on the floor and close up to the rectangular raised bases of the balusters. The picture is done in an Impressionist style: The flowers look to have been created by dabs of bright yellow, pink, red, and orange--and are so abundant that only the outline of the black gondola can be seen. The gondolier wears white pants and shirt and yellowish hat, and he holds a white paddle in his hands. The water and sky are varying shades of blue-green done in short horizontal brushwork, creating a very peaceful scene.
