Provenance
Purchased by Isabella Stewart Gardner with seven other simillar statues of saints, which likely were all once part of a single altarpiece (museum nos. S38w3.1-8), from the art dealer Theodor Einstein & Co., Munich for 980 marks on 16 August 1897 through her husband, John L. Gardner, Jr. (1837–1898).
Commentary
Isabella Stewart Gardner kept meticulous records of many of her acquisitions. In keeping with this legacy, object information is continually being reviewed, updated, and enriched in order to give greater access to the collection.
