Isabella Stewart Gardner and her husband Jack adopted Augustus Peabody Gardner, along with his brothers William Amory Gardner and Joseph Peabody Gardner, after the death of their father. Photographed here as a young man, Augustus would go on to serve as both a congressman and a Massachusetts state senator.
