Overview

Archives

Complementing the art collection and providing a window into the world of Isabella Stewart Gardner, the Archives document the history of the museum and the life of its founder. Ranging from 1840 to the present, the archival collection contains letters, diaries, photographs, objects, newspaper clippings, and manuscripts including Isabella’s handwritten book catalogues, a pair of her purple satin shoes, and a copy of The Bostonians given to her by Henry James in 1886.
