Entered the collection of the antiques dealer Sajiro Yamanaka in Peking, about 1901. 
Purchased by Isabella Stewart Gardner from the Yamanaka sale by the auctioneer Frank A. Leonard at Copley Hall, Boston for $25 on 7 November 1902, lot 187.
                    Commentary
        Isabella Stewart Gardner kept meticulous records of many of her acquisitions. In keeping with this legacy, object information is continually being reviewed, updated, and enriched in order to give greater access to the collection.
