The dog to our right is roughly the size of Mrs. Gardner’s torso, with dark shaggy hair and an open mouth as though in mid-pant. The dog to our left is leaning on Mrs. Gardner’s lap. This dog is smaller, with a lightly colored body and a dark colored head. Mrs. Gardner is clothed in a white, floor length dress and a hat that supports a sheer veil which covers her face, leaving details slightly blurred. We can see that her mouth is closed and she is looking forward towards the camera, head tilted to our left. In the background, taking up the majority of the top half of the photograph, we see a variety of foliage from trees, shrubs and grasses with bits of sky peaking through the leaves. There is a marble statue of a torso to our right, behind Mrs. Gardner. To our left is the base of a column which sits at the end of the wall that Mrs. Gardner and the two dogs are on.
