The woman in the front wears a black dress and angled cap over her large, curled hairstyle. She is sitting in an armchair, and her feet are crossed on a footstool. Her female companion reclines behind her, and wears a similar outfit in lighter colors. Between them, they have a large open book in their laps.. A wooden, carved table separates the two women from the standing man. On this table, two cups and long-handled spoons rest on a small tray, next to a round sphere and a large, dog-eared white paper. The man wears an elegant jacket with frilly white cuffs and collar. He is pointing to the sphere with one hand and the dog-eared paper with the other. He has a white, smooth, shoulder-length wig and appears to be looking intently at the woman, as if he is instructing them. Several indistinct objects are scattered around the room: a bust of a male head sits on a high pedestal behind the standing man; one or two large flat, rectangular objects lean against the table legs; a stack of haphazardly arranged cushions or books in front of a bench draped with fabric are behind the woman; and a high arched, multi-paneled screen rises behind the the bench, partially covered by a pulled back curtain.
