This vertical, very small, minutely detailed, black and white etching on off-white paper centers on the mythical Phoenician princess, Europa. She is accompanied by three of her maidens, being lured by a white bull with a small putto at its side. In the center of this grouping, Europa is dressed in a long, disheveled, gown, headpiece with flowing ribbons, and outer, full-length cape. She is sitting on the bull’s back, her ankle-laced, sandaled foot held stretched above the ground. Only the front of the standing white bull is visible. One hoof is slightly raised, a garland of flowers encircles his neck, his mouth is open, and his tilted head and two pointed horns are backed by Europa’s billowing cape. A nude young putto stands facing the viewer on the left to the side of the bull, his right hand raised and holding a small branch, possibly flowers. A second bull lies on the ground behind the putto in the shadows. Three maidens are to our right, all dressed in long, low-cut gowns, one exposing a breast, all busying themselves with tasks, such as bending down to pick flowers, carrying a bowl, or assisting Europa. This scene takes place in front of a high, rugged rock formation in the right background with the calm sea in the left mid ground, behind which low hills arise in the background. On the left we see a very small scene of a bull with a figure on its back, swimming out to sea and on the shore three, long-dressed figures waving or reaching out to the bull and its passenger. This small distant scene appears to be an episode coming later than the larger, more detailed primary event in the right foreground. The white and gray shaded sky fills at least half of this sketch with a couple layers of cumulus clouds, many small birds and two putti flying above the scenes on the ground. Tiny cross-hatched lines are sketched to portray much of the primary scene with more solid lines suggesting vegetation. The sky is predominantly plain, although areas of repeated, horizontal strokes suggest a partly overcast day.
