Web Commentary
Isabella and Jack Gardner likely visited Spain in 1888 on the advice of their friend, artist John Singer Sargent. The Gardners’ route through the Iberian peninsula is carefully recorded in diaries and travel albums and follows the rough guidance that we know Sargent gave to other friends. Jack, who enjoyed experimenting with photography, took this photo of a street in the southern Spanish city of Seville during the trip.
