Commentary

Tomita Kojiro (1890-1976) sent this image to Isabella Stewart Gardner on December 13, 1915. The picture depicts the memorial stone that honored their mutual friend, Okakura Kakuzō (1862-1913) who died in Japan. Okakura worked at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston as the curator of Japanese and Chinese art. He and Gardner were close friends from 1904 until his death.
