Commentary
Inspired by the City Beautiful movement to beautify urban areas during the turn of the 20th century, the city of Boston created competions for residents to create the most impressive window boxes and gardens in their neighborhoods. This1906 application form is for residents of the West, North, and South Ends of the city which were considered “Tenement Districts” at the time.
Isabella supplied the prizes for 18 individuals, offering $100 total (about $3,000 today). She also hosted the winners at her own extensive gardens in Brookline, Massachusetts called Green Hill.
