On a sepia-toned, aging paper, this pen etching displays an animated scene of soldiers riding on their horses. In the left of a frame, a long-haired soldier wields a polearm in one hand while looking at and gesturing to a spotted dog to his right. To their right at the center of the frame, a soldier sits on his horse and looks back at the long-haired soldier, pointing with his entire arm to the right, commanding the others in that direction. As the scene unfolds, the limbs of the four other horses in the etching tangle together as they point in different directions, following their respective leaders’ direction. A fifth horse  begins to rear as its soldier holds up a sword, ready for battle. Behind this commotion are city walls of brick that stretch across the background, encasing a large shed-like structure at the left and two roofed buildings with nearby trees at the right. The entire etching has a thick, double border framing it with the words “Arcangiolo Spampani Fece in Penna” underneath.
