This pair of identical, round, brass buttons has been repurposed into a pin. The buttons are United States military buttons from the Union Army of the Potomac used during the Civil War. They show the image of an eagle, with wings open, holding a sheaf of three arrows clutched in its left talon. The eagle’s right talon holds a leafy olive branch. It’s head is pointed left and its breast is obscured by a shield containing stars in a row across the top and vertical bars below them. It’s beak is slightly open holding something small and rounded. The buttons are domed with a background of closely spaced horizontal ridges and a border of small stars. The buttons are inserted into plain, round brass frames that are welded together where they meet side by side. They are also joined on the reverse side by a welded long, narrow, rectangular clasp. The clasp has a long, sharp pin and small, curved open sleeve to secure it. Stamped on the reverse side of each button: D. Evans & Co. / Attleboro Mass
