Commentary

Isabella's friend Gretchen Osgood Warren gave her books that cover a wide range of genres. This book set during World War I is one of a series of mystery novels featuring the character Richard Hannay. The best known Hannay novel, The Thirty-Nine Steps, was adapted into film by Alfred Hitchcok in 1935. The inscription on this book notes that it was a loan but as can happen when friends lend books, it was never returned; Isabella kept Greenmantle in the Vatichino gallery.
