This vertical black and white photograph is of the painter John Singer Sargent. Sargent is shown in profile, facing to our left, from the chest up and gazing steadily to his front. He has light skin and graying, short hair with a mustache and beard. He is wearing a medium-light colored three-piece suit, a light-colored shirt, and a dark tie. The background of the photo is fuzzy. On the reverse side of the photograph in our upper right side, “Property of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum” is handwritten. At the center of the reverse side is a stamp of a horse surrounded by two circles. Between the circles is written “Sidney Carter, Montreal.” Under the stamp “July 1920” is handwritten.
