This uniform design is sketched in graphite, ink and watercolor on paper and depicts a male figure from his neck down standing against a plain tan background. His full-length double-breasted off-white coat has red trim at the cuffs and collar. The white collar of his shirt is visible at the neckline. He stands with his arm to our left on his hip and his other arm down at his side. He appears to be wearing white gloves. He has on long white pants and black shoes.

Commentary
Joseph Lindon Smith was an artist and close friend of Gardner’s. His fanciful design for her museum’s majordomo reflects their shared love of theatre and costuming.
