Stuck in the frame is a piece of paper with the following in Mrs. Gardner's handwriting: "Adelia Stewart died in New York January 6th 1886." [I&N, Vatichino, p. 48]

Probably inherited by Isabella Stewart Gardner from her father David Stewart (1810-1891) in 1891.
Commentary
Isabella Stewart Gardner kept meticulous records of many of her acquisitions. In keeping with this legacy, object information is continually being reviewed, updated, and enriched in order to give greater access to the collection.
