This horizontal oil painting is a landscape.  The sky is filled with gray billowing clouds.  Just above the tree line on the left we see a brightening sky of blue, creating a sharp contrast to the entire painting’s muted colors of gray, brown and green. The landscape beneath the sky slopes downward to the right. At the extreme left, almost blending with dark leafy trees, is the blunt shape of a chimney and beneath it the vague shape of a roofline. Further down the slope, past a copse of trees, the roof and stone steeple of a church rises up and dominates the center of this scene. A row of dark hedges between the viewer and the church block all but the roof and steeple. The parapet at the base of the steeple has small spires, three of which are visible. A tall arched window in the gothic style is centered in the tower. A single bare tree with a dark brown trunk and branches sticking out in upward directions sits alone at the far right. An untended field, faded winter grasses and bare sandy patches contrasting with scrub brush meets us in the immediate foreground. The initial WMH in red with the year 1863 can be seen in the lower left corner.
