This oblong, black cut paper silhouette is mounted on white paper.  The silhouette is a scene of two men seated on the ground facing each other, a donkey lying on the left behind one man, and a horse standing on the right behind the other. The trunk of a large tree occupies much of the left side of the scene. The tree spreads its bare branches in the background over the figures and disappears over the horse's head out of the picture plane.  An owl with cut-out eyes sits on one of the branches.  On the left, the stout, short man with a wide-brimmed hat sits on the ground with his left leg bent at the knee.  He tilts back to drink from a large vessel which he holds up to his mouth with a bent elbow.  Behind him the donkey rests with his rump against the base of the tree and his nose pressed against the man's back.  The second man  also wears a wide-brimmed hat and appears taller and thinner than the first.  He sits hunched over while his horse, looking thin and bony, stands behind him and arches its head over him. The man holds a long pole that he's planted on the ground between him and the other man. The pole angles up behind the horse head and off into the upper right of the picture plane.
