This is an antique silver footed drinking cup with a single handle and lid. The feet on the tankard consist of claws resting over silver balls. The outside of the tankard is engraved with elaborate designs, including some faces in relief. Some of the designs have been worn and are scarcely visible due to wear, including scratches, dents, and tarnish, on the surface of the tankard. The curved handle is engraved and has carvings at the top and bottom. A bust of a man is carved into the handle just below the hinge. Above the hinge is a tiny statue of a lion standing on three legs with the paw of its fourth leg resting on a curved bow. The lion’s tail is curled up over its back; it mouth is open with its tongue hanging out. The top of the tankard is edged with a braided rim. The lid has rounded sides and a decorative rim around the top. Engravings and carvings of heads and shell-like pieces surround a center circle. In the center, these words "Det Heels Tarv, Ved Söefart Fremes, “Navigation furthers the interests of the whole (society).” are engraved. Stamped on the bottom are the letters HB, probably the mark of Hans Pettersen Blytt, the silversmith; a gate with seven balls underneath, the mark of the town of Bergen; and a crab. Inscribed on the front of the tankard are the symbols, JFD, H:L., D:L. possibly the marks of the owners, and W75 lod, the weight in grams.
