In the foreground, from left to right, are several small boats facing into the cruise boat, carrying mostly women who are looking at one another. Three light-skinned women in the boat to our left stand or crouch, wearing elegant robes with hats. One holds a fan up to her face. Three women in the next boat appear similarly. In the boat to our right is a light-skinned man dressed in a dark printed top and white robe, sitting and looking away from the others. The sides of the boat curve from our left to right across the print. They are painted white with decorative black dots and dashes. Rectangular white posts extend from floor to ceiling on both sides of the boat. Multiple decorative lanterns hang from the ceiling; there are a few standing lanterns as well. The light-skinned women on the boat wear elegant, belted robes and hats with bands of fabric or feathers. The few men appear bald and wear black or white robes. To our right, a figure who is likely a performer has a pink and white face, curly hair, and a long flowing peach and black robe. His neck is twisted in one direction and his body in the other. His hands, held up, appear to be making an expressive gesture. Just beyond this character, to our right, are two figures playing stringed instruments and another playing a drum. In the background, the river extends to the coastline. Some boats are visible on the river, and docked. Buildings, an arched bridge, and a pier are visible in the distance.
