Web Commentary
In 1890, Isabella Stewart Gardner and her husband Jack spent a week at the Henley Royal Regatta in 1890. They stayed on a house boat named the Sunbeam and watched the races near the University of Oxford's Balliol College Boat Club. Balliol College supporters asked Mrs.Gardner and her party to shout 'Well rowed, Balliol!' when their crew passed and they cheerfully obliged. The painter and friend of the Gardners, Ralph Curtis was among their group and painted this watercolor of the scene.
