The scene features a small river that comes into view at the bottom right of the scene and curves left paralleling a narrow, rough walking path. Receding from the viewer, both river and path disappear around a bend at the left middleground of the work. The river is calm and muddy, reflecting the sky and the abundant vegetation abutting it. The left of the path is rocky while the right side of the path is crowded with untended plant life. It appears to be late-summer; the wild vegetation is dense and green in the background but the weeds around the path are dry and parched. Hints of autumn yellow, orange, and red appear on some of the plant life on the far river bank, just below a bare dirt embankment. The blue sky meets an irregular outline of green hills and trees. There is a hint of a storm coming as the clouds deepen and begin to darken over the hills. Although there are no people, there are several sections of white fencing barely visible on the far right side of the river.
