This vertical portrait of a richly attired noblewoman is painted in oil on an oak panel.  The woman is shown from the waist up and is turned somewhat toward our left.  She is light-skinned, with a round face, eyes gazing toward the distance, light-brown arched eyebrows, a generous nose, a closed mouth with full pink lips, and slight double chin.  On her head is a dark, close-fitting hood that covers almost all of her reddish-brown hair.  Around her shoulders and falling toward her waist is draped a piece of brown fur.  The garment she is wearing under it has several parts.  At the front, above the woman’s chest, is a part that is sheer or as light as her skin and that has a vertical design or cut out in the shape of two teardrops linked one on top of the other.  The rest of the bodice and the shoulders of the garment are dark brown, except for a thin, light band.  The sleeves of the garment are light-colored, loose and puffy, and could be made of fur, above the elbow.  The sleeves are more tightly fitting and brown at the forearm, and are light-colored and bunched at the wrist.  The woman’s hands are mostly visible at the bottom of the painting, and she is pinching a folded paper between her right thumb and index finger.  The woman’s jewelry includes a long necklace with a three-part pendant dangling toward her waist, a belt from which another pendant hangs, and three simple rings (two of which are on her index fingers).  In back of the woman are two vertical brown stripes at the left and right edges of the painting, with a plain sea green background in between that surrounds the woman’s head and shoulders.  The painting’s frame is large, with two gold, patterned bands encircling it and a brown band in between them.  Attached in the brown band below the painting is a brass plate with the name, “Mabuse.”
