Almost twice as tall as wide, this Italian cabinet combines a top half which was originally a writing desk, to which a supporting credence was added underneath. This walnut cabinet is extremely elaborate with multiple drawers and doors on which many wood carvings of full figures and busts of people as well as bronze fixtures have been added. The original top half consists of a center portion with four small, square-shaped drawers in each corner with a somewhat larger, horizontal drawer in the middle on the bottom. There is a narrow, horizontal drawer in the middle at the top. Each drawer has a small, bronze handle in the form of a woman’s head in the center. In the middle of this center portion, between the upper and lower drawers, are two lateral, smaller doors on each side of a larger center door. Each door has a small, bronze lock and is ornamented by recessed floral or architectural carvings. Full length caryatids of nude women and men in armor flank this central portion with somewhat smaller, full length figures also flanking each door. The overall piece is topped by a frieze of alternating high relief figures or busts and squares of wood crowned above with five stripes of contrasting, carved wood which progressively cantilever outward about two inches beyond the body of the cabinet. This original portion sits on four horizontal strips of alternating plain wood and strips carved with contiguous spoked-circles. The supporting credenza mimics in degree of elaboration the above writing cabinet. Beginning at the top of the credenza which rests flush with the bottom of the writing cabinet, six horizontal strips of contrastingly carved wood, progressively slant inward; thus the body of the credenza is recessed a few inches on each side. The credenza has two, relatively narrow, horizontal drawers above two side-by-side large doors. The fronts of the drawers are ornamented with floral carvings and the doors with carved overlapping circles on the perimeters and heavy, recessed carvings in the centers. Each drawer has the bronze head of a woman and each door, the bronze bust of a woman as a handle.The upper lateral corners each bear a head of a square face with a furrowed brow. Below on each side, the full-length figure of the upper body of a nude woman terminates in v-shape folds with a tassel on the end, carved on top of a ladder-like structure. The bottom of the credence is made up of two repetitively carved, heavily ornate strips of wood on top of a plain strip, all of which sits on four carved paws, one in each corner.
