This vertical watercolor painting depicts a stairway within the courtyard of the Palazzo Barbaro in Venice. On the left side of the painting, over twenty blue-tinged gray stairs hug the white wall of the Palazzo as they ascend before making a turn to the right and continuing out of view in the top right of the painting.  An ornate black wrought-iron railing rises on the right of the stairs and also turns right toward the top. Potted green plants of various heights line much of the stairway next to the wall which houses a barred window. A slender column and capital rise from the ground next to the stairs on its right, and support the edge of a brown roof. A large dark metal bell hangs from the roof to the right of the column.. A couple tall green fern-like plants are in pots on the ground behind the column and next to the courtyard side of the stairs. On the back white wall of the courtyard two darkly shaded windows, one on top of the other, look out onto the courtyard.
