This vertical oil painting depicts the Virgin and Child in the setting of a rose garden. In this scene, the medium-light skinned Virgin, wearing a flowing red cape over a red gown, sits on what appears to be a ledge. She has a high forehead and her reddish brown hair falls back and over her right shoulder. The medium-dark skinned, naked Christ Child is perched in the crook of his mother’s left arm. He reaches behind his mother’s neck with his right arm and across her collarbone with his left arm. Vining green leaves spread across the bottom foreground. To our left is a pink rose bush growing up and behind the Virgin and Child along a trellis. White flowers resembling lilies grow up on tall stems to our right. Above the Virgin are two winged angels wearing turquoise gowns and holding a jeweled crown over the Virgin’s head. Above the angels, a bust of a bearded godlike figure appears within rays of light and a pink blush background.
