This watercolor painting shows a view of a main waterway in Venice from the interior of a church. The painting is dominated by the framework of the doorway. In the foreground is a gray stone floor leading up a slightly raised ledge. The double carved doors are fully opened to reveal the view. Cropped views of carved wooden walls are seen next to each door. A red drapery hangs down to cover about three-quarters of the opening. The drapery appears darker at the top, and gradually lightens as the sun penetrates at the bottom. The canal view depicts ochre stucco buildings with white trim and doors lined up along the canal. In the water there are two gondolas carrying passengers. In the lower corner to our right is the artist’s signature.
