This horizontal, rectangular oil painting depicts the music room at Green Hill, the Gardners’ home in Brookline. The room is a colorful and jam-packed collection of furniture, objects, paintings, and a spinet piano. The room is seen from floor to ceiling. The ceiling has a bluish hue, with light coming in from our left at midground The ceiling molding , as well as the molding over a door on the back wall, is yellow. The top two-thirds of the walls are a teal blue, with yellow wainscoting on the bottom third. The floor is brown to shades of yellow as the light hits it in the foreground. Paintings hang on the back wall. On the back wall to our left is a dark brown piano with keys visible. Sheet music is open and a candelabra with candles sits on the top to our right. A wooden bent bow chair faces the piano. Next to the piano to our right is a covered table on which sits a lamp with a decorative shade and a covered ceramic ginger jar. To the right of the table is an upholstered arm chair; in the corner to our right is a similar chair placed in front of a large painting. Next, a wall sconce with candles sheds light on a small painting below. To our far right is what appears to be an extension of the room. Small paintings adorn the back wall and a large crystal and gold chandelier is also affixed to the wall. A brown chair facing out is situated mid-ground, and a wood chair with yellow upholstery on the back and seat is in the lower corner to our right. On the seat of the yellow chair is the artist’s signature.  In the middle of the room is a grouping of chairs, some upholstered, facing a hearth with long, green and gold brocaded drapes on either side. A long green sofa faces into the space, so the viewer sees the back of it. Next to the sofa to our right is a table with a blue tablecloth with gold stripes. On the table is a large lamp with a pleated yellow shade and a framed pencil drawing of two faces. In the foreground to our left is a wood armchair with its back and seat upholstered in yellow fabric with multi-colored pattern. To the right of that is a round pedestal table with elaborately scrolled feet. On the table are several objects, including a carafe with several small glasses, glass bottles and vases, a tray, and a cherub-like figure holding up a gold vase of pink lilies with their left arm and hand.  To the right of the table is an identical armchair.
