This is a vertical oil painting of Saint Filippo Neri. The Saint’s light-skinned face, gray-blonde facial hair, collar, and hands provide lighter contrasts to the reddish-black background. His grey eyes look straight forward, separated by a narrow nose, under which closely sealed pink thin lips reveal the only hint of a livelier color in this painting. His facial hair surrounds his mouth and terminates in a short, slightly pointed neck-length beard. His grey hair appears at the sides of his head, topped by a soft, black hat in which the front and two side corners are visible. His left ear is painted in detail; the right ear is not visible, in part due to the slight turn or his head to his right, but it looks like the Saint is missing an ear. His white collar has two conventional shirt-collar points, which contrasts with the black and grey coloring of his robe, which at the level of its wide sleeves seems to merge with the background. In contrast, his right hand emerges waist-high out of the dark robe, with detailed fingers holding a brown chain, probably a rosary, between the top right and the bottom fingerless left hand. On our right, above the Saint’s shoulder, is a light red wisp of a praying figure. The portrait rests in an ornate gilded wooden frame with a large motif of two cherubs holding a goose in the top center.
