Portraits From Boston, With Love

2024 Summer Exhibitions

2024 Summer Exhibitions

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum’s summer exhibition suite explores how portrait photographs by artists from New York City, Boston, and Dallas reflect and refract multifaceted LGBTQIA+ experiences. Across three galleries, including the Anne H. Fitzpatrick Façade outside the Museum, we illuminate how portrait photography is a powerful tool for LGBTQIA+ self-discovery, community-making, and affirming of found family. Each artist presents us with their unique processes, which prioritize making space for their subjects and shaping stories—sometimes their own—on camera.

Portraits From Boston, With Love

Portraits From Boston, With Love, on view in the Gardner’s Fenway Gallery, will feature photo portraits by three photographers who call the Boston-area home. Their gender expansive experiences provide us with a unique lens through which to see them, their chosen family, and their communities. Olivia Slaughter (she/they), a Gardner Museum Artist-in-Residence in January 2024, has created portraits of their chosen family during their residency; Jaypix Belmer’s (Jaypix) self-portraits provide an example to others to let their true and best self shine through (as represented with gold); and Ally Schmaling (they/them) has created a psychedelic love letter using color and light for those who inspire them and whom they admire within their chosen family and community.
