Higginson is depicted reclining in an armchair, which is turned away from his large, cluttered desk and toward the viewer. The chair has a wood frame with a leather back and seat held by round-headed fasteners. Higginson’s gaze is straight out toward the viewer. His hair is combed close to his scalp except for a lock falling over the his forehead to our left. His full mustache falls over his upper lip, and his goatee falls just below his chin, coming to a point. He wears a white shirt, a dark buttoned vest, and an open jacket. He holds a dark colored blanket over his lap with his hand to our left; his arm to our right drapes over the back of the chair and he holds the arm with his hand. His knee to our right is unclothed and peaks out from under the blanket. The image is again contained within a smaller boarder then encased in a larger boarder. The words "GREAT CITIZEN" are featured in the top left corner. The title of the piece appears split over the two images spelling out the words "IN MEMORY OF A GREAT CITIZEN."
