This head is a remnant of a statue of Silenus carrying a flat fruit basket on his head. The remnant contains just the head, the basket, and Silenus’s left hand holding the basket. The head is bald on the top and encircled by a band of flowers. The forehead is high and appears clenched above the nose and frowning. The eyes appear to be rolling up into the lids, the nose is wide with the tip missing, and the ears are flat to the head and pointed. The lips are parted and slack. The bottom of the cheeks and chin are covered with what appears to be a beard. The basket is placed horizontally on the head and is slightly tipped to our left. Twisted bands on its surface seem to indicate that it was tightly woven from grass or other slender material. The fruits are evident at the top of the basket; some flow over the basket on the side tipping to our left. The hand was broken off just below the wrist, and holds the basket on the side to our right. We see the wrist, the lower part of the palm, and the fifth, or pinky finger holding the basket from the back. We also see part of the thumb from under the basket. Several holes are seen in the surface of the flowers, beard, and some of the fruits.
