A lion and the rugged slab it stands on are carved in-the-round in white stone. The lion is standing, its back feet and front left foot on the ground, while its front right leg, bent at the elbow, has its paw resting on an open book, proportional to the animal’s size. The book bears the inscription “Pax tibi Marce, evangilista meus.” We see the lion in semi-profile, looking away from the viewer, to our right. Its hind legs are curved, and its front right paw is large and heavy-looking. The mane is carved deep and undulating, draping its neck and part of its back, and displaying a thick, twisted texture, while being slicked back on its head. Fur tufts are visible on the underside of the front right leg. Its eyes are large and bulging beneath furrowed brows. Its nose is narrow and prominent, with deep visible nostrils, and its mouth is slightly ajar with a fang suggested beneath its left jowl. Also apparent on the lion’s back are two retracted wings, textured such that each large feather is distinguishable. Almost all of the lion’s right wing appears as a fractured section from the rest of the statue, also being colored differently, in off-white. Behind its right front shoulder there is a drilled hole with a raised edge.
