Said to have been purchased by Isabella Stewart Gardner and her husband, John L. Gardner, Jr. (1837-1898), from a Mexican collection, probably a collection sold at the auction house Leonard & Co., Boston in 1870.
Entered Isabella Stewart Gardner's collection by about 1897.
Commentary
Isabella Stewart Gardner kept meticulous records of many of her acquisitions. In keeping with this legacy, object information is continually being reviewed, updated, and enriched in order to give greater access to the collection.
