This vertical fireplace has a limestone mantle and sides, a plaster hood, and a black iron grate. The height of the fireplace including its hood is grand, reaching about two-thirds up to the ceiling molding. Above the mantle, the pale green plaster hood flares out, like a lampshade. The top and bottom of the hood form semicircles resting against the wall. Four decorative ropelike designs run vertically from top to bottom. The mantle also forms a semicircle and is decorated with carvings in relief. Across the mantle, to our left and right, there are scrolling ribbons and vines with oak and other types of leaves, as well as wreathes. The top of the mantel has a straight border while the bottom has a twisting, ropelike border. Inscribed in the center, in block letters, is the phrase “Motu et lumine.” A twisted limestone column frames each side of the firebox. The inside of the firebox is lined with bricks and five rectangular bricks rest on the floor at the front of the hearth. The black openwork grate sits on the hearth and fills about half of the space from the floor to the mantle.
