Provenance
Purchased by Isabella Stewart Gardner from the antique dealer Moisè Dalla Torre and Co., Venice on 24 August 1899 for 800 lire.
Commentary
This gilt marble-topped table was not made all at once: its toupie feet and aprons are later additions, painstakingly carved, punched, and gilded to blend with the rest of the frame. Changing fashions may have called for a taller table height with more ornate decoration.
