Provenance
Purchased by Isabella Stewart Gardner from an unknown art dealer in Rome for about 500 francs (with a head of Bacchus, likely museum no. S12w11) on 2 November 1897, through the Roman art dealer Alfredo Barsanti and the painter Joseph Lindon Smith (1863-1950).
Commentary
Isabella Stewart Gardner kept meticulous records of many of her acquisitions. In keeping with this legacy, object information is continually being reviewed, updated, and enriched in order to give greater access to the collection.
