A relief of a winged, hoofed four-legged animal holding a book arises from a rectangular slab of Italian marble. The animal’s body is seen in profile facing to our left with its head turned to directly face us. It stands on its hind legs, its front legs slightly raised to hold open a book so that two horizontal pages are clearly facing us. The top page contains a cross then reads “SLVEAS” while the bottom page reads “EVGLISTA”. The front foreleg closest to us supports the bottom of the book while a hoof visible on the top of the book holds it open. Slender, lined wings arise from the shoulders of the front legs to curve up and frame the animal’s turned head. On its head, four curly lines denoting hair are carved in its forehead between two short triangular horns that top its head and ear flaps which protrude from the upper sides of its face. The lined, almond-shaped eyes are widely spaced, and the fore-face is long and ends in an upward turned snout. Above this animal relief a raised, horizontal, rectangular strip of marble is incised with a geometric design consisting of two long, horizontal rectangles, one inside the other, framed by a semi-circular curve bending inward toward the rectangle on either side.
