Provenance
Said to have come from the Gardens of Sallust, Rome.
Purchased by Isabella Stewart Gardner as a base for the attached colonnette (museum no. S5c11) from the connoisseur and art dealer Stefano Bardini (1836-1922), Florence with a second cinerarium (museum no. S5c7) for about 2,550 lire on 29 September 1899.
Commentary
Isabella Stewart Gardner kept meticulous records of many of her acquisitions. In keeping with this legacy, object information is continually being reviewed, updated, and enriched in order to give greater access to the collection.
