This small section of worn, mid-15C, Italian red velvet is enclosed in a simple, rectangular, blue painted, wooden frame. The textile features a large, stylized, central pomegranate pointing upward, although the pomegranate looks more like a cross section of an artichoke because of its central, well defined heart, regularly arranged, exterior leaves and prominent, bottom stalk. This fruit and the other motifs are formed by skillful cutting into the deep pile of silk velvet. All the deeply cut elements appear off white in color while the uncut parts are red. Metallic gold yarn was used throughout, although the textile is so worn that little is detectable.The light colored pomegranate head is surrounded by a maroon color, spade shaped design that echoes the form of the pomegranate. Surrounding that deep red element there is a border of alternating leaf forms and flower heads. The leaves are arranged in a regular pattern so they are the same size and shape and all point out. They appear off white with red veins.  The flowers have an outer circle of five red petals and an inner small circle of five deeply cut white petals.  The four corners of the textile are abstract, stylized, floral designs. The lower two contain large, mostly red flower heads while the upper two corners are lighter, with areas of spiraling stems and less identifiable floral motifs.
