This composite border of lace is 8 inches wide and over a yard long. It was made as a main panel sewn to an attached lace border panel. The main panel, which is about 6 inches wide, has a clothwork linen ground. The raised work shows a tree in the center with a scene mirrored on both sides. On either side of the tree is a monkey, in profile view, sitting on their haunches holding a stem of flowers. Next to them is a fantastical bare-breasted mermaid-like creature with spiraling flower forms coming from her forked tail. She is holding up a large, shallow basin from which flowers grow and spill.  A rabbit hops on the flower strewn ground beneath. On each end of the main panel a pair of chimeric creatures flank another tree that bends to shade them with its wide leafy branches. The animals have spotted leopard-like bodies, long giraffe-like necks and heads, and goat-like horns. The narrower border panel shows more fantastical animals and botanical forms in raised work on a clothwork ground. The animals on the border panel include rabbits, foxes, cats, and other fantastical creatures. They alternate with simple tree forms or sprays of leaves and flowers in a continuous flow. There is a delicate, flame pattern, open, picot border on three sides (all but the long footside). This border design is also found between the smaller and the main panel on the two short sides.
