Provenance

Purchased by Isabella Stewart Gardner (as part of a set of matching lions, museum nos. SOw6-s and SOw7-s) from the marble mason and dealer Francesco Dorigo, Venice for about 609 lire on 22 September 1897.

Commentary

Isabella Stewart Gardner kept meticulous records of many of her acquisitions. In keeping with this legacy, object information is continually being reviewed, updated, and enriched in order to give greater access to the collection.
