This tiny head and bust portrait of a young woman is an oval engraving printed on paper. She is turned slightly left so we see all of her face except her right ear.  The miniature is uncolored but we can infer her pale complexion and light hair from its contrast with the dark gray background. Her hair is parted in the center and arched to each side, giving her forehead a heart shape that is echoed in the small headpiece she wears. Her hair is dressed in tight rows that form a perfectly ordered cap around her head and dainty left ear. Her hairstyle seems older than her smooth, unblemished face with its full jaw line. Her clear eyes engage the viewer’s directly but her sweet smile makes her gaze inquiring rather than challenging. She is dressed in eighteenth-century European court clothing including a ribbon bow tied tightly around her neck just under her chin. Her deep U neck gown reveals most of her snow white chest but a large bow hides the cleavage of her breasts. That strategically placed bow makes the dress seem juvenile rather than provocative. A bit of the curving, oval back of the chair where she is seated is visible on the lower right.
