Virginia sweetspire (Itea virginica), perennial

Flowering shrub, Height (up to): 152.4 cm (60 in.)

Commentary

Itea virginica
This native deciduous shrub is one of the only plants in the living collection that makes an appearance in the Courtyard twice each year. In the spring, clusters of tiny white flowers drape over fresh, lime foliage. As temperatures drop, Itea’s brilliant crimson leaves provide an autumnal backdrop for the Chrysanthemums. Gardner Museum horticulturists overwinter Itea outdoors, mimicking their habitat on the edges of wetlands.
